Juventus transfer news: Rating Serie A giants’ free signings in recent years, including Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo and Emre Can

After months and months of speculation, Adrien Rabiot’s future finally looks certain as the midfielder closes in on a move to Juventus.

Rabiot was heavily linked with a number of top clubs in Europe including Barcelona and Liverpool after it became clear last summer he would not be extending his time with Paris Saint-Germain.

And the France international looks set for a move to the Italian giants on a free transfer after his contract with PSG expired at the weekend.

He becomes the second free agent to join the Old Lady this summer, with former Arsenal man Aaron Ramsey completing his move to Turin.

They also have a new manager in town, with Maurizio Sarri leaving Chelsea to succeed Massimiliano Allegri this summer.

But how have their free signings performed at the club?

Fabio Cannavaro (2009) – 3/10

He joined Real Madrid from Juventus in 2006 but re-signed for the Old Lady three years later.

The centre-back made 27 appearances in 2009/10 for them but Juventus finished seventh in Serie A and won no trophies. Cannavaro moved Al-Ahli in the UAE in the summer of 2010.

Luca Toni (2011) – 3/10

Signed from Genoa in January 2011, striker Toni made a reasonable start and bagged a landmark 100th Serie A goal when scoring for Juventus for the first time.

He was relieved of his duties in the summer of 2012 having not won any team or individual accolades with the club.

Reto Ziegler (2011) – 0/10

The former Switzerland left-back signed a four-year contract Juventus in May 2011 but went on loan to Turkish side Fenerbahce less than four months later.

Following loan spells at Lokomotiv Moscow, Fenerbahce for a second time and Sassuolo, Ziegler moved to FC Sion in February 2015 having made 0 senior appearances for Juve.

Michele Pazienza (2011) – 1/10

Italian defensive midfielder Pazienza signed a three-year contract in June 2011 and made a handful of appearances under Antonio Conte before spending the second half of the 2011/12 season on loan at Udinese.

Pazienza moved to Bologna in August 2012.

Andrea Pirlo (2011) – 10/10

AC Milan are still kicking themselves for letting Pirlo go to a direct rival for absolutely nothing in the summer of 2011.

Many thought he was past it as he was 32 at the time but Pirlo still had plenty to give and added extra class to Juventus in midfield.

The Italian won the Serie A title in his first season and added three more as well as a Coppa Italia before calling it quits at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Lucio (2012) – 1/10

The centre-back signed a two-year contract with Juventus in 2012 and helped them win the Suppercoppa Italiana against Napoli in August 2012.

However, an injury early into Lucio’s Juve career led to him losing his place in the team and he left for Sao Paolo in December 2012.

James Troisi (2012) – 0/10

Although he signed a four-year deal in August 2012, Troisi’s contract did not fully come into Juventus’ ownership until June 2014.

Not that it mattered really as the Australia international left the club in January 2016 having made no senior appearances for them.

Paul Pogba (2012) – 9/10

The flamboyant Frenchman joined Juventus in July 2012 after turning his back on Manchester United due to a lack of first team action at Old Trafford.

And Pogba was a huge success in Turin, winning four Serie A titles in a row as well as two Coppas Italia.

He also won the Golden Boy award in 2013 and his exploits caused United to buy Pogba back for £86million in August 2016 – a record transfer fee at the time.

Nicolas Anelka (2013) – 1/10

This man has been everywhere which includes five months at Juventus during the second half of the 2012/13 season.

Anelka was part of the side that won the league title and that was enough for the striker to get a move to West Brom in the summer of 2013.

Fernando Llorente (2013) – 6/10

The big striker was a very useful player for Juventus to have in case things were not working out for the likes of Mario Mandzukic during matches.

Llorente scored 27 goals in 68 appearances and won a hatful of trophies in his two-and-a-half year spell at the club including three Serie A titles.

Kingsley Coman (2014) – 4/10

Signing the France international on a five-year contract in July 2014 was viewed as a massive coup for Juve, however, he only spent one season playing in the iconic black and white stripes.

Winger Coman had two loan spells at Bayern Munich before moving to Bavaria permanently in 2017. However, he still won three trophies in Italy.

Lorenzo Rosseti (2014) – 0/10

The striker came to Turin because Siena were forced to release all their players as they were not registered in the professional league following their bankruptcy.

Rosseti was immediately loaned out to Atalanta and also had loan spells at Cesena and Lugano before moving to Ascoli permanently in 2017.

Andrea Schiavone (2014) – 0/10

Former Juve youth player Schiavone also joined the Serie A giants following Siena’s bankruptcy but made no appearances for the Old Lady’s senior squad and he subsequently joined Cesena in July 2016.

Neto (2015) – 3/10

The goalkeeper was highly-rated when he signed for Juventus in July 2015, however, 20 appearances over two seasons is not a good return for anyone even if he does have two Serie A titles to his name.

Neto has recently joined Barcelona but it looks like he’ll be their third choice keeper behind Marc Andre ter Stegen and Jasper Cillessen.

Alberto Cerri (2015) – 0/10

Signed for Juve in July 2015 but spent all his time on loan at other clubs before completing a permanent move to Cagliari in February.

Sami Khedira (2015) – 8/10

Another player Juventus have landed on a free from Real Madrid, but Germany international Khedira has been much more successful than Cannavaro was in his second Juve spell.

Khedira has been a central part of the club’s success in recent seasons and has already won eight trophies there. He’s contracted at the club until 2021.

Dani Alves (2016) – 6/10

Juventus landed a player from Real Madrid’s main rivals Barcelona too, in the form of full-back Alves.

He spent one season in Italy – winning Serie A and the Coppa Italia where he scored a goal in a 2-0 final win over Lazio. However, he was unable to help Juve beat Real Madrid in the 2017 Champions League final.

Simone Ganz (2016) – 0/10

The striker completed his move to Juventus in May 2016 but was immediately sent out on loan to Hellas Verona before leaving Turin just a year later.

Emre Can (2018) – 5/10

It’s been a reasonable first season in Italian football for Germany international Can, who has a Serie A title and Suppercopa Italiana winners’ medal to boast.

He might be a bit annoyed with himself for leaving Liverpool last summer as they went on to win the Champions League which is a big target for Juventus.
